Outside In

"All that we are not stares back at what we are."
  -- W. H. Auden

I'm not sure why this quote struck me so this morning.  Perhaps it's the thought that what I'm not is every bit as real as what I am.  It's part of me even though it has not taken form as me.  Maybe it's just because it makes me feel like the center of the Universe, the center of a vast web of connection.  Maybe it's the thought that everything that lies outside me is actually interested in me ... as interested in me as I am in it.

What do you think?

  1. Thought-provoking Auden quote, Joyce.

In one respect, I think this is about our consciousness and unconsciousness of ourselves, of our too-great focus on "all that we are not", completely dismissing and therefore not making the most of who or "what we are". Perhaps another way of talking about being present, and of acceptance, and of being whom God made us?

    Love your image.

  2. Hello lovely Joyce,

All that we are is the opposite side of what we are not -- to be what we are, we embrace what we are not. We cannot recognize what we are not without knowing it.

When I am sad, I know beauty. When I know beauty, I am sad for it is the perfection I seek knowing I am not it.

And yes, a very beautiful image.
